Curtain Call
John Leighty
I saw a George Burns performance when he was pushing 100 – and he didn’t miss a boomer beat.“I’m happy to be here,” he said in a strong tenor voice, waving his trademark cigar and pausing to gaze deadpan over the ritzy showroom audience. “Hell, at my age, I’m happy to be anywhere!”

Creature Coexistence
Actress Betty White:
"All creatures must learn to coexist. That’s why the brown bear and the field mouse can share their lives in harmony. Of course, they can’t mate or the mice would explode."

TV Show Host Ellen DeGeneres:

Student of Zen asks Guru: "What happens after death?"
Guru: "I do not know."

Whistle While You Scratch

Bonnie, an orangutan at the National Zoo in Washington, D.C., has taught herself to whistle. She apparently  learned by watching zookeepers who whistled as they worked. Researchers say Bonnie's feat may help unravel the puzzle of how human speech evolved.
Yeah, but can she carry a tune?

Pickled Herring Finally Kills Woman

A Dutch woman who lived to a record 115-years-old contended that eating pickled herring daily was the secret to her longevity. Scientists say Henrikje van Andel-Schipper's mind appeared sharp until her death in 2005 and a post-mortem analysis revealed a well-preserved brain with few signs of Alzheimer's or other diseases associated with cognitive decline.
Now the herring fishery is threatened – nice going Henrikje!

Ping-Pong Smileys

If you're in a cheery mood, you can spread happiness by interacting with family, friends, and acquaintances and vice versa, report researchers from Harvard University and UC San Diego. Your happiness index jumps 15.3% if you're around a close friend who is happy, pings 9.8% if it's a friend of a friend who is happy, and bounces 5.6% if it's your neighbor's sister's friend who is happy.
The payoff: You may live longer by sending smileys through your social network.
